The course content provides practical perspectives on how data in research can create value and relevant motivation for the digital transition. This can be achieved by implementing data-driven approaches in research to provide realistic impact and exploitation.

The digital transition is no longer optional.
Data must be shared. Storing data is required to evidence published data. Your research is a part of a value chain that only can optimize by sharing data. Machine learning and AI make better use of data for faster research progress but should not be developed in isolation. Regulations like digital product passports, data spaces, etc require to share data. In EU there is the green and digital (twin) transition.
Since you anyway store data and will share data, that can be used to position for your research and career progression.
The courses introduce how shared data creates value, assets, and exploitation pathways. They cover how to build convincing impact and new business models that fund post-project activities (lasting impact, research continuation to higher technology readiness level and commercialization).

Short course
Digital Transition for Green Technologies: Essentials and Future Perspectives
Half-day format, 2.5 hours, group, announced dates.
A short course with lecture and Q&A focusing on practical perspectives for aligning research activities with the digital transition. The course introduces participants to the digital transition in green technologies and provides practical perspectives on how data in research activities can create value and relevant motivation for the transition. This can be achieved by implementing data-driven approaches in research to provide realistic impact and exploitation. We share a real case example from our own pilot (GlobalSiC).
The course gives insight into how shared data creates long-term impact through assets, exploitation pathways and new business models. This includes how data-driven value creation can attract investment as technology reaches higher readiness levels and application in society. The course also addresses positioning for research funding in the next Research and Innovation Framework Programme (FP10, 2028–2034).

Orientation for Research
Digital Transition for Green Technologies: Orientation for Research
Individual course. You can start anytime. A seven-week programme with three biweekly one-to-one sessions (90 minutes each). The purpose is to establish a foundation that serves to present that you are aware and are positioning to align with the digital transition. The orientation will demonstrate a realistic motivation about how the digital transition is relevant in your research. The course Roadmap for Research and Career builds on this foundation to build the details specific for your research.
After registration, the participants will get a video lecture that introduces Essentials and Future Perspectives. The first online lecture is about one week after that. Participants complete the course with a short assignment on “orientation for research” that is started in lecture one and finalised by lecture three, applying insights from the lectures to describe their own research activity, data pathways and initial positioning for the digital transition. The assignment develops throughout the course, from initial data pathway framing in lecture one to a more developed value creation perspective by lecture three. Each participant receives feedback on the data-driven value creation content of their assignment.
Pre-lectures: A link to a video about Essentials and Future Perspectives is sent one week before first online lecture.
Lecture 1: The lecture starts with a review of Essentials and Future Perspectives. In this lecture there is further introduction to data-driven value creation with a real case example (GlobalSiC). You introduce your research. Assignment before Lecture 2: draft how data and digital transition connect to your research.
Lecture 2: You present your draft of orientation of research assignment. We discuss how to develop it further so it credibly reflects digital transition relevance for your research.
Lecture 3: Finalise your orientation position for a digital transition.

Roadmap for Research and Career
Digital Transition for Green Technologies: Roadmap for Research and Career
Individual course. You can start anytime. The individual track runs over three months with biweekly meetings and consists of three components: the short course content, the orientation content, and mentoring for individual case building for research as well as career perspective. Participants complete the course with an advanced assignment (roadmap for research and career).
Essentials — content as described above for short course.
Advanced — the orientation course content with additional material on values and assets for research impact, business and sustainability.
Individual sessions — one-to-one meetings to develop your own data-driven value creation case. You will receive feedback from us and refine your advanced plan for research and career.
Participants receive a certificate of the course and assignment after completion: “Digital Transition for Green Technologies: Roadmap for Research and Career — ICM Research Institute, Alminica AB, Sweden.”

Digital Transition for Green Technologies Workshop
Expert webinar and peer-to-peer learning.
Expert webinar — by Mats Brodén with Q&A.
Peer to peer learning — each participant presents their case in a 10-minute presentation followed by 20 minutes of feedback from Mikael Syväjärvi and Mats Brodén, as well as fellow participants. Participants learn from each other’s cases and build both knowledge and network through the process.

Lectures by Mikael Syväjärvi who has more than 20 years of experience from international technology transfer, start-up creation and research-to-business activities. This experience forms the basis for his SME, Alminica AB, which contributes to European research projects with transfer of knowledge for impact and exploitation from research and innovation towards business and sustainability. Recent examples include the EU FET Open project SiComb (2020–2024) and the EIC Pathfinder project rePowerSiC (2024–2028). He is accepted as a mentor in the two European Innovation Council (EIC) 2026 programmes EIC Tech to Market and EIC Women Leadership. These activities support researchers and innovators in areas such as value proposition development, early-stage commercial thinking, leadership development, and strategic reflection on future opportunities arising from research and innovation.
The GlobalSiC pilot case that we will share is a part of Wafer Ecosystem. The pilot case is explored together with Mats Brodén (expert in creating value and assets from data) and Lars Montelius (former director International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, INL that is the first International Intergovernmental Organisation (IGRO) in Europe conducting world-class research and development in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. He is currently member executive board The Innovative Advanced Materials Initiative, IAM-I that is the international non-profit Association that will operate the European co-programmed partnership Innovative Advanced Materials for Europe.
Why this is essential
Shared data is transforming how value is created in society. It underpins regulatory frameworks like the Digital Product Passport, drives AI development in technology and business, and shapes how products, services and policies are designed. Data that is accessible, combinable and shared across value chains enables optimisations that benefit entire sectors.
Research is part of this transformation. Results must be documented and shared as evidence of what has been achieved. Open access publications make findings available to other researchers and to AI systems that advance knowledge. But not all papers are open access, and valuable data also exists in lab books, datasets and unpublished records.
Data-driven implementation is no longer optional for researchers who want to create credible impact and exploitation. Without it, research risks to be not relevant as part of the digital and green transitions that are reshaping European society and economy.
Researchers who understand how shared data creates value and who understands how to position their work will have advantages, and strong motivations for realistic impact and exploitation. This training builds that understanding.
- Data used in research publications must be stored and made available on request.
- Regulations including Digital Product Passports and data spaces also require data to be stored and shared.
- Machine learning and AI are part of a value chain, and that chain can only optimise through shared data.
Your data pathway is how your research connects to the digital transition.
It is also how you demonstrate relevance for project funding and how you position your research in the European research and innovation context.
A clear data-driven value creation strategy makes your research more useful, more credible, and better positioned for competitive project proposals.
