Research Frontiers from Valorisation
You can actively develop valorisation pathways to understand where your future research frontiers can be.
Valorisation has a broad sense. The EU valorisation policy describes that the knowledge valorisation process creates social and economic value from knowledge. That includes linking of different areas and sectors to transform data, know-how and research results into products, services, solutions and policies.
You can position for relevant future research frontiers by evaluating the valorisation pathways of your research.
For example, one strong but not known motivation is the smart specialisation strategy (S3) for regional economic growth in which Mikael Syväjärvi has experience when that was initiated by European Commission. In the S3 there are focus areas, and very likely your activity aligns with one of those. That supports how your research is locally relevant.
Other positioning is by better understanding of the framework programme (FP10) where the research frontiers will be active. Mikael Syväjärvi is involved in EU proposals by his SME Alminica AB that is expert in transfer of knowledge for impact and exploitation. From those we have insights to what is valuable in FP10.
Each researcher and case is unique. This capacity building is an individual programme. The programme runs over three months with biweekly meetings. Besides feedback to develop relevant valorisation pathways and research frontiers, you will have mentor type of career advices from Mikael Syväjärvi.

Dr. Mikael Syväjärvi has more than 30 years of experience from pioneering research areas during 26 years in academia, and exploitation and impact since 2005. His experiences form the basis for his SME, Alminica AB, which contributes to European research projects with transfer of knowledge for impact and exploitation from research and innovation towards business and sustainability. Recent examples include the EU FET Open project SiComb (2020–2024) and the EIC Pathfinder project rePowerSiC (2024–2028).
He was also expert for Region Östergötland 2014-2018 for the focus area “Advanced Materials” to develop the smart specialisation strategy for regional economic growth (initiated by the European Commission), and Alminica AB was procured 2016-2018 to support the implementation.
Mikael was in the board 2014-2018 of Swedish national innovation programme in graphene, representing research and SME.
He is accepted as a mentor in the two European Innovation Council (EIC) 2026 programmes EIC Tech to Market and EIC Women Leadership. These activities support researchers and innovators in areas such as value proposition development, early-stage commercial thinking, leadership development, and strategic reflection on future opportunities arising from research and innovation.
He is advisor and investor in various research-based entrepreneurial activities, and can apply his broad experience to understand how any research area can position in larger context.
